American Football boots, often called ‘Cleats’ in the States, are a cross between a normal sports trainer and a football (soccer) boot. Nike are the market leader in this department (as they are in most sports’ footwear), offering a vast range of American football boots for the consumer to choose from. American football boots, unlike their soccer equivalent, have more protection around the ankle region, due to the physicality of the sport and the variety of hits and therefore twists/sprains that an American football player might suffer. Like almost every American football garment, protection is first on the list of design priorities, closely followed by speed and flexibility endurance. As American football is played on grass, it is important that American football boots have significant grip on the soles. As such, like their soccer cousins, American football boots are fitted with several studs dotted around the soles for maximum grip. Not only does this help the players stay on their feet but also allows greater manoeuvrability on the field of play, particularly important for running backs and wide receivers. The most expensive American football boots are made from synthetic leather, as this allows for a lightweight boot but also one that is very supportive. Prices can be as high as £80 for top of the range new models, but should only really be of importance to professional athletes or college players as there is not a significant difference between these and cheaper models until you reach the higher standard of play, where every tiny detail can affect the result. |
