American Footballs

When one thinks of American footballs, the name readily attached is Wilson. The manufacturer is synonymous with American footballs, dominating the market because of their high quality product, the huge variety of products on offer, and of course their contract as one of the official provider of American footballs for the NFL and other leagues. Other manufacturers are also in contention, Nike being one of the main competitors.

American footballs are shaped similarly to a rugby ball; in fact this where the design originated from. The shape of an American football is nearly that of a prolate spheroid but pointed at both ends, whereas a rugby ball is oval. The main reason for this difference is because of the different rules played in each game. Forward passes in rugby are outlawed, but play a significant role in American football. Because of this, American footballs have been designed to be the most efficient shape possible for the forward pass, an instrumental part of the sport.

Standard size American footballs are around 28cm long with a circumference (in the centre) of around 56cm. The balls are required to be made of leather in NFL rules, but Wilson also make a variety of plastic and rubber balls to be used for fun. The American footballs will often have a grained texture on the surface of the leather to provide more grip, assisting in both the throwing and catching of the ball. Each American football is required to be made from four panels, with two of the panels perforated along the edges so they can be laced together. These laces are often used by quarterbacks in the action of throwing the ball.
