The baseball cap has grown from a unique symbol of the sport of baseball to become a popular part of western culture. A simple design, most baseball caps have an adjustable fitting for all head sizes. The generic baseball cap will have a soft top with a hard bill, often worn at the front, which is either curved or flat depending on the design. The bill was originally designed specifically for the sport of baseball to shield the sun from the wearer's eyes (with the bill worn towards the front), and this is indeed one of the reasons why the baseball cap has risen in prominence and into a fashion statement. Ironically, it has become fashionable to wear the baseball cap either to the side or to the back, a look invigorated by many hip-hop artists on their music videos. Another reason why the baseball cap has become so popular is that it can be worn with almost any hair style: even those with a pony tail are able to pull it through the gap between the cap and adjuster at the back of the baseball cap. The baseball cap also has some other professional uses other than in the sport of baseball. Some armed forces are known to use the baseball cap, including the United States Navy. Baseball caps of different colours can denote different ranks or functions of a person. Similarly, police units such as SWAT in the United States and divisions of the Metropolitan Police in the UK sometimes use baseball caps as part of their uniform.
