Baseball Helmet

Baseball helmets are an essential accessory for any baseball batters playing in the collegiate or professional game of baseball. The baseball helmet provides protection to the batter's head from bad pitches by the pitcher. As the force of the baseball coming at the batter is extremely powerful, the impact of a baseball if it hits a batter's head or facial area can be extremely damaging if not fatal. This is why baseball helmets are essential to every batter.

The first baseball helmet was created in 1907 by Roger Bresnahan after he had been struck in the head by a baseball during a game, however despite being created so early baseball helmets were not in mainstream use until much later on, and were not made mandatory until 1971 after several batters had been hospitalised due to head injuries from bad pitches on the field of play. Even then, players that were 'grandfathered' in could still choose to play without wearing a baseball helmet. The last player to do this was Bob Montgomery who retired in 1979.

There are a variety of different baseball helmets and other head gear (including face guards) available for purchase, usually averaging at about £40 or cheaper. Rawlings have produced a 'one size fits all' baseball helmet which has a durable ABS shell and a unique elastic band which you can self adjust to fit your head size – essentially it works like 'hard hats' that builders and engineers use on construction sites. The main difference here being that the baseball helmets provide ear coverage on both sides, fitted with snaps to use along with the chin straps to stabilise the baseball helmet on the batter's head.
