There are two different types of gloves used in the sport of cricket. Cricket gloves are used by both batsmen and wicket keepers, but no other players in other positions are permitted to wear them. Obviously bowlers would not want to wear cricket gloves as this will compromise on their feel of the cricket ball and thus their ability to spin bowl will be hampered. Fielders are not permitted to wear gloves, unlike in the sport of baseball where they are given large gloves to aid in catching. Despite their only being two different types of cricket gloves, they are very different and serve different purposes. The wicket keeper wears very large webbed gloves, similar to the baseball equivalent to aid in catching the ball which is coming at extremely high speeds. The other type of cricket glove is worn by the batsmen. The batsmen wear cricket gloves with a lot of padding on the back which is designed to protect the fingers, hand and the bones in the hand from injury should they be struck by the approaching ball. This is very significant because cricket balls are easily the hardest type of ball in major sports as they are made from cork and so it is very important the batsmen’s hands are protected, allowing them to walk onto the field with confidence. There are many different manufacturers of both types of cricket glove, with the main players in the market being Slazenger, Kookaburra, Gray Nicolls, Newberry and Gunn & Moore. All are available to purchase online from various websites and will cost around £30 to £40. |
