Speedball / Speed ball

There are a great variety of different speedballs on the market made by the usual boxing accessories manufacturers. Speed balls are usually cheaper than a standard boxing punchbag but remember that you will need to purchase the hanging equipment (and of course need somewhere to hang your speedbag from) as well as the speedball as this is not a free standing piece of gym kit!

The speed ball is a lot smaller than a normal punch bag and as a result a lot lighter. Speedballs need to be hung from the ceiling at around average head height for the boxer's weight class and sex. The speedball is the second essential boxing punch bag for any serious or amateur boxer. The speedball works different attributes to the standard boxing punch bags. By training on the speed ball, the training boxer will improve his or her reflexes, timing, agility and most importantly hand speed. It is a crucial piece of equipment for any boxer, but especially for those with a dog fighting/brawling style who like to get into the thick of the action whenever possible.

When using the speedball, one of the most common drills used is when a boxer will hit the speed ball repeatedly one hand after the other as fast and as accurately as possible. He or she can then alternate hands to work on weaknesses in techniques in either throwing punch. If you are punching with bad technique you will be impotent when it comes to that big fight. Therefore it is very important that punching technique is mastered first before adding speed because otherwise the whole drill is completely pointless.
